I’ve done some gig photography for HYMN recently. Here are some photos from Golden Pelicans not-so-well-attended Copenhagen gig. They actually played in Malmö too – a shame I missed that. Their new record is really ‘all killer no filler’.
I was a bit worried about seeing a reformed Pandoras, but turned out the Kim Shattuck-led version were brilliant. Here are some photos from their KB18 gig, the first on their European tour.
Nightmen is a Swedish band out of Malmö, including members from “other bands”, but they’re just as good – or better – than those other bands. I’ve already called Girl For You the best punk 45 from Sweden this year, so if you haven’t checked them out yet you should do so now. They turned in a great set supporting The Hussy last week, and they have an album coming out soon. Check out some more pictures from the gig here.
Another great Swedish punk group that played Malmö recently is Viagra Boys from Stockholm, that remind me a lot of East Link. Watch out for their first two releases this autumn.
Toda our flatmate Levi Mandel’s first show in Sweden opens at Galleri Gordon. Levi is an artist working mainly with photography, and most of his work done in Sweden will be on display in the exhibition Lemonade, which runs until the end of the month. He’s been in Sweden since January, studying at Malmö Art Academy, and is going back to New York next month.
We’ve now got Cooper Union student Levi Mandel staying with us. He’s from Brooklyn and a photographer and zine-maker. Check out his photography on flickr by clicking on the photo above. It makes me want to go back to the summer in Auckland. Levi’s also got a tumblr of Daily Photographs that’s worth a look.
This is quite a good Flickr add-on, for viewing photos seamlessly. Pity they didn’t make the embed resizable!
I still think it’s quite incredible that Tyvek played in Malmö last night. I managed to get a few good shots since I was literally inches from their singer. Daniel captured “4312” on his phone, and someone actually filmed the whole set but don’t know for what purpose. I think I most enjoyed hearing “Sidewalk” and “Frustration Rock” – old faves from when I heard their first cdr three years ago. Picked up a copy of their tour 7″ on Les Disques Steak, which you can get here.
