Tomorrow the second semester of Designskolen’s Master of Design degree starts, and I’ve just got feedback on the final assignment of semester 1. For my essay on User-involvement in the design process I got a 12, and it ended up being a fruitful exploration of e-Types’ recent upgrade of EAT. It’s written on the basis of interviews with my colleagues Lasse Martinussen, Camilla Frederiksen and Mari Randsborg, contrasting their views with both user-centred approaches and design-driven innovation. It’s written in Swedish, but hopefully will be available from in the near future.

2013 in review

2013 has been a really good year. I completed two internships, got a fulltime position, started a Masters degree in design, and was awarded a bursary for that. I’ve learnt a lot about what I’m good at and worked on some inspiring projects for Dansk Industri, Lundbeck and many more. You can already read about some of them on e-Types new website, which was launched a week ago. It’s been an important year for e-Types too, not only because they’ve got a new virtual home. Two employees have left to set up a new agency together with ex-Kontrapunkt folk, called AM, we wish them the best of luck! Sister agency India have now changed name to e-Types Daily, and together with Playtype are now all under the same roof at Currently it’s only featuring news items, with the full cases being added in come January. Before then you won’t be able to check out the brilliant arrow key navigation. But if you head over there now you will however be able to read some copy I have written, including the headline on the main page. This is the splash screen, that will change over time.

Musically it’s been as good as any year. I’ve tried launching a new club night called Shadows & Reflections together with my friend Lauren, and although we haven’t found a permanent home yet, I think it’s been successful. My highlight of the year was definintely going to the Double Sight weekender in Glasgow, and also doing a half-hour set there. I’ve got some of my top wants this year, here are my favourite purchases:

Früt of the Loom – One Hand In the Darkness Loom
The Other Four – Once and For All Girl P.L.A.Y.
Chapter II – East of My Place Philips
Lydia Marcelle – The Girl He Needs Manhattan
The Avengers – Crying All Alone Mr Genius
The Rogues – And You Let Her Pass By Decca
The Sparklings – Now It’s Your Turn to Cry 7 Up
George Cash  – The Phantom of My Past Philips

Charlotte & Emily – Love Not Have I New Voice
Something Young – Oh Don’t Come Crying Back to Me Fontana
The Girls – My Baby Capitol
Cinquetti – Πάντα Κοντά Μου Pan-Vox

The best gigs I have seen in 2013 have by far been Night Beats, Bad Sports and Cosmonauts in Sweden, Jacco Gardner and Dead Ghosts in Denmark. Something that I’ve left out of my Top 15s of albums and singles are reissues. There have been a few this year that deserve a mention:

Clothilde – French Swinging Mademoiselle 1967 Born Bad LP
Los Brincos – Contrabando él CD
Neo Boys – Sooner Or Later K Records 2LP
Adrian Lloyd – Lorna Sundazed RSD 45
Denise & Co. – Boy What’ll You Do Then Big Beat 45

Finished the second assignment for the Masters, in this one I deal with Brand New’s BNC13 conference and their meta-hardcore branding. In another good news, I will continue work at e-Types next year. Look out for the new soon, it’s been a long time coming. Oh, and here’s a poster I made today.

Designer at e-Types, Copenhagen

As of next week, I will be working at e-Types as a graphic designer. I am extremely pleased about this, since I’ve already started to feel at home there and consider it a great place to work and grow in. I am still open to freelance opportunities, but they will be limited to my spare time. Please see for more information and contact details, and feel free to follow e-Types on facebook if you want timely updates on our projects.

e-Types 3 months

This three-month internship has gone fast and I have been too busy to write about all the great new releases out there. Make sure you like the Record Turnover fb page to catch updats about all the latest records to obsess over. Only two weeks left until the summer holiday here and I’ve had the pleasure of working on big projects e.g. for Carlsberg, that should soon result in REAL products on the ACTUAL market. Keep an eye out here for updates on that, as well as news about what will happen from August onwards.

SIDE60 | Mexico podcast

Preparing for the e-Types summer party I’ve been ploughing through compilations of Mexican psych and garage, and it’s become my new fixation after Brazil. There are no bands from Brazil on this mix, but a few from other South American countries. Las Chic’s is definitely Mexico’s premier 60s girlgroup, but I’d much like to hear Las Pink Panthers who are in the cover image. Sadly I don’t know of any recordings by them. Neither of the Chic’s albums, Alto somos las Chic’s or Sola, Triste y Sin Amor, seem available anywhere online, but a few tracks are to found on the always reliable Garage Latino blog. Apart from the well-known Mexican groups Kaleidoscope, La Revolucion De Emiliano Zapata, Rabbits & Carrots and Los Dug Dug’s, I’ve found some really inspired cover versions and a few amazing originals. The standout of the entire mix is Los Nivram’s amazingly moody “Sombras” (covered a few years ago by The Ugly Beats). And not far off is La Maquina Del Sonido with a heavy psych sound. Now it’s time to go back to those compilations for a second cull!

Los Monstruos – Hey Monstruo
Los Monjes – Mi Mami Dijo
Los Shains – Vamos
Rabbits & Carrots – Express Yourself
Las Chic’s – Samba Lulu
Apocalipsis – Pruebalo
Kaleidoscope – Hang Out
Dynamita – Toma Tu Tiempo
La Kabala – El caminante solitario
Flying Karpets – Winter Song
The Beatniks – Outside Chance
Los Fugitivos – Marcando el paso
Los Nivram – Sombras
Los Belmonts – Brinquen
The Loving Darks – Complicado
The Pets – Hello I Love You
La Maquina Del Sonido – No Quiero Ya Volver
Las Animas – El Tipo Loco
Los Strwck – Go Go 70
Aguaturbia – I Wonder Who
La Revolucion De Emiliano Zapata – Petra Y Sus Camaradas
Los Dug Dug’s – Let’s Make It Now
Los Shakes – Aprietame Mas

Next month, I start an internship at e-Types, my favourite design agency in Denmark. I’m very much looking forward to it, they recently published their work for the new edition of the Roskilde music festival, and hopefully I will get to work on something just as exciting. Image grabbed here.
