There, handed in the final assignment for this semester. Next up, in 2015, will be the masters thesis. This last essay was about soft innovation, comparing Spotify to the new cassette-manufacturing boom, using Fred Thomas’ interview with Burger Records.

When two posts in row are about assignments I have done for the Masters course, you can tell that I have been busy. Here is this semester’s 10-pager, still waiting for feedback. The essay is about community brandning, subcultures, and the visual identity I have developed for the MOD-EST weekender 2014.

Passed essay number 9 for my Master of Design course. Here’s the cover, as it says it’s about the experience economy in relation to design. The case used is the Adbusters-initiated Buy Nothing Day, which seems to be all but forgotten today. Perhaps an Occupy Nothing movement is needed to reinvigorate it?

And so I finally got some feedback on my last assignment of year 1 of my Master of Design degree. This essay is about the aesthetics of smell and I got a top mark for it I’m pleased to say. Some of the scents discussed are Vezzoli’s GREED, Maison de Margiela’s REPLICA, and artist Niki de Saint Phalle’s own scent (for which you can see and old advertisement for below). Recently I found out about another product series in the same intersection between art and perfume. Andrea Maack, an Icelandic company, have a number of scents available that were originally created for an art exhibition.

Back from Sinful, and what a weekend it was. Luckily I was able to hand in my final assignment for the Masters course before heading off. While I am waiting for feedback on that, here’s my assignment from the previous month. That one was inspired by a Dangerous Minds meme called “famous composers doing normal shit”. Arnold Schönberg playing pingpong. I talked for a while about his Op. 42 while showing clips from Bruce LaBruce’s new film adaptation of Pierrot Lunaire (Op. 21).

Approaching midterm at the Master of Design and the workload is getting heavy. My second essay deals with The Pirate Bay in relation to the Walkman and Paul Du Gay’s “circuit of culture” model. Lev Manovich’s “Media After Software” is worth a read if you are interested in this stuff.

Or you could just re-watch every episode of Soft Focus. I recently watched Svenonius interviewing Stephen Malkmus of Pavement and then Kim and Thurston of Sonic Youth. Brilliant series.

It’s been a busy start of the year, here’s the first assignment of the new semester at Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art. This one is about sustainability and based on a case study of British Channel 4 success Utopia. New season coming this year.

Up next, new mix of new releases, some reviews and a couple of interesting design project.
In the meantime, check out Colin’s ace new Hyperion’s Revenge.

Tomorrow the second semester of Designskolen’s Master of Design degree starts, and I’ve just got feedback on the final assignment of semester 1. For my essay on User-involvement in the design process I got a 12, and it ended up being a fruitful exploration of e-Types’ recent upgrade of EAT. It’s written on the basis of interviews with my colleagues Lasse Martinussen, Camilla Frederiksen and Mari Randsborg, contrasting their views with both user-centred approaches and design-driven innovation. It’s written in Swedish, but hopefully will be available from e-types.com in the near future.

The third assignment for the Master of Design course was oral. I talked for two minutes about the origin of the word “lead” and its relation to “suffer”.

Finished the second assignment for the Masters, in this one I deal with Brand New’s BNC13 conference and their meta-hardcore branding. In another good news, I will continue work at e-Types next year. Look out for the new e-types.com soon, it’s been a long time coming. Oh, and here’s a poster I made today.
