Here’s the next installment of alphabet soup, now artists and groups starting with the letter Y. X will follow shortly – although it was a pain to compile. Starting with one of the first tunes to feature ‘fuzz’ guitar – Beach Boys’ “Little Honda” performed by the masters of fuzz Yo La Tengo.

After playing at London’s Hidden Door Club earlier this year, I’m extremely pleased to tell you that I am also DJing at two amazing weekenders this year. The first one is the Two Men From L.I.N.Z. mod weekender in Linz on the Rhein in Germany. It’ll be my first visit and I’m honoured to be there as a DJ my very first time. Some of the other DJs are Rob Baily, Sukie Saturday and Bill Kealy and French Boutik are playing live on a riverboat.
Later in the year, around Halloween as usual, Lavarone in the Italian alps turn into a psychedlic mod mayhem. I’ve been there for a few years already so I know it’s a big deal to be playing there. I’ll be playing in the afternoons and at the mod ballroom on the Monday night. It’s a dream come true really.
We’re approaching #100, so I thought, what could be better than dedicating the last 25 numbers to the 25 letters of the alphabet? I’ve introduced a new series of lists on HYMN, compiling songs by artists and bands on each letter. Starting at the end, since X, Y, and Z are always the hardest – I present Part Z here.
The concept is that I simply browse though my folders of music files on my old harddrive and pick songs from each letter – stuff that I haven’t heard in a while or things that may be of interest to the general public. Check out the article on HYMN for the full tracklisting, including comments on each song (in Swedish).
Two great bands who played together in Malmö last year. Sweden’s Nightmen just released their first album and it’s killer – even better than that first Terrible Feelings EP. Check out the video for “Beach Party” below and make sure to pick up a copy of Fifteen Minutes of Pain afterwards.
You haven’t missed the fact that Sheer Mag unleashed their third EP, have you? I preordered my copy from Monorail ages ago and now it’s turned up. As expected, all four tracks are brilliant. I’ll definitely be giving both this and the Nightmen LP a spin at the end of May when HYMN are DJing at the Quilt gig in Lund. Quilt’s Plaza is easily one of the best albums of the year so far, at least in my book.
Here’s an old recording I made of Scottish group California Snow Story (ex-Camera Obscura). It’s from a lovely live set at Tchai Ovna back in 2006. David from the group recently asked me for the full recording, and pretty soon afterwards this one turned up on Soundcloud. David also tells me there’s a new album in the works so stay tuned!
