2011 | top twenty singles

2011 was the year of the flexidisc’s return, thanks to Pirate Press. Christmas released an excellent flexi already last year, and this year we got one from Sea Lions and the fantastic package from Castle Face (featuring Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall & Mikal Cronin, Blasted Canyons, Bare Wires and The Fresh & Onlys) found at #5 in this list. A couple of bands could have been featured twice here, like Outer Minds (2 great singles) and Bleached (3 singles this year!), but to be fair they’re not. The BellTowers’ Lily-Pad Recordings EP is actually from 2010 but I don’t think it was available from Kool Kat until this year, and especially not the bonus disc.

SIDE27 | podcast

Here’s the next podcast, which is full of soft rock and psychedelic sounds. Had a bit more fun mixing this since most of the cuts are mid-tempo. Geographically, it’s dominated by the US and a few representatives of the San Francisco scene (like the pre-Harpers Bizarre group The Tikis). Then there’s a few UK psych pop pearls from The End, The Young Idea and late Swinging Blue Jeans. The Dutch pop up with The Resident and my new favourite Dutch singer Bojoura, whose 1968 album Night Flight, Night Sight is stellar. Also, a couple from Spain and France as a matter of fact. Ronnie Dante is of course same singer who later found fame as The Archies’ frontman. Charity Shayne was involved with the Charles Manson Family and arrested after the murders at Roman Polanski’s house. As with the previous podcast, a few of these will turn up in my set tomorrow, consisting of my 50 favourite songs I’ve heard this year.

SIDE26 | podcast

Here’s the new podcast, uploaded on mixcloud after many attempts. Seems like normal LAME-encoded mp3s don’t work anymore. Anyhow, this one was made at the same time as #24, and works as a companion. Those songs were chosen with dancing in mind, while this one suits a rainy afternoon spent indoors better. There are a few uncomped gems on here, like The Sloths (above) b-side, recently shared on Garage Hangover, and The Effects acetate (both sides of which you’ll find here). Other tracks that have been rescued for us and released on cd come from New England teen group Gay Blades, New York’s great The Lost, Californians The Us, and N.A.I.F. Also not to be missed is the haunting track “Young Girl” by Greece’s most American-sounding garage group The Persons.

The Stolen Children – I Need You Tomahawk
The Cannons – Days Go By Night Owl
We Who Are – Remember When Love
The Pogs – I’ll Never Love Again Leedon
Modern Folk Quintet – If All You Think Warner Bros.

Steve & The Board – So Why Pretend Spin
The Morloch – Every Night Reg Grundy
The Rokes – Ascolta Nel Vento Arc
The Us – How Can I Tell Her Big Beat
The Revelles – Little Girl Jim-Ko
