September’s Todo Gira

flyer13

We’ll be warming up for Double Sight ’15 in two weeks time, with another Todo Gira. Marcus is also doing the last ever Radio Syd dj set this weekend, so Todo Gira will sadly be the only psychedelic night in Malmö (and Sweden?) after that.

The Sound of Young Scotland Pt. 1 & 2

The Sound of Young Scotland is a project created by Grant McPhee and Digital Onset Films, documenting the history of Scottish indie music. The first film, called Big Gold Dream, premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival earlier this year – winning the audience award. Soon, the second part Teenage Superstars will appear in the cinemas. I have designed the posters for the films, as well as a Sound of Young Scotland logotype (set in Berlingske Serif Stencil, by Playtype). The first poster shows the members of the band Scars out of Edinburgh, while the new one depicts Glasgow darlings The Pastels. The inspiration for Big Gold Dream were Fast Records album sleeves, and for Teenage Superstars it was the posters for legendary club Splash One! (run by Bobby Gillespie, amongst others). The film also includes Scottish artist Jim Lambie’s footage from the club in 1986, with cameos from many now well-known musicians.

Flag design

flags

It’s not every day you get a chance to make your country a new flag – but this year New Zealand invited designers to submit designs for a new flag, some of which will be put to public vote. But woe, did the Flag Consideration Project pick some tawdry solutions for the list of 40 contenders.

They also failed to include the most brilliant solution I’ve seen so far, from Auckland agency Alt Group. Alt Group never fail to disappoint, and wouldn’t you want this to be your national flag too?

The G100 resumed

cover

About five years ago I posted the first volume in what was going to be a 4 volume set compiling the singles the make up the Garage 100, or the 100 most collectible garage singles according to g45central. I never got further, because of the very complex covers I had designed for the compilations. Printed on two interlocking sheets of 10″ newsprint, with a large centre hole, the cover was meant to look like a black vinyl record, that could be folded down into a quarter that would be the right size to fit a CDR. Depending on which way you folded it, it could be the cover for any one of the four cds. Because of the scissor fold, the cover laid flat could be switched over from showing the vinyl side on top to bottom, to showing the tracklisting, to showing the flipside of every 45 side chosen for the compilation.

back

Here’s the first volume, uploaded again for you. And the matching info to each track, which is printed on the opposite end of the 10″.

back2

Here is the tracklisting of the first volume, featuring #1 to #25, with catalogue number, indication of A or B side, as well as the title of the other side. Five years ago, some of these were pretty hard to track down in digital form.

SIDE 68 | podcast

cover

The Record Turnover podcast is back, and long overdue. That’s why this one is a round-up of some of the best garage and punk releases of the year so far. Some great albums and singles have come out this spring, on labels like State, Castle Face, Burger of course, Randy, Trouble In Mind, Hozac and Famous Class. Two bands to watch are The Magnetic Mind who are one of the most promising new garage/psych acts from the UK (along with The Exploding Sound Machine), and Thing which is a new project from Reatards-member and Lover! main man Rich Crook. La Luz have released a new LP this month, and Negative Scanner and Sheer Mag I have already written about here or on HMYN. A review of the amazing Uh Bones LP is coming soon as well!

Todo Gira seeing double

flyer

The latest TODO GIRA went down quietly in Malmö last week, oh, and we did one in April too that I forgot to mention. It looked like this.

flyer2

In other news both me and Marcus are going to the Double Sight weekender in Glasgow come October. You should check out the event page, and you’ll probably catch me behind the decks in the basement on the Sunday night. And look out for the promo mix some time tomorrow!

Inherent Vice

vice
This year’s best movie so far, Inherent Vice, also sports some of the finest looking titles I have seen in a while. They’re done by Scarlet Letters and according to Movie Title Stills Collection, typed in Rolling Pen and Ne10 (although I’m not conviced about the latter). I wish the script would have been animated as if written however.
